                                                12 Month Children’s Program

Children’s library programs are an important part of any great library. For this assignment I have picked a relatively small library that caters to many surrounding cities. Although I have called my library Ukiah Public Library, my library plan is not based on the actual Ukiah Public Library, but on a fictional one I have created for the town of Ukiah, CA. I credit my research and past assignments in 260a with some ideas I have for my twelve-month plan. I have also looked over Penny Pecks book “ Crash Course in Children’s Services.” I found a lot of information online by doing searches for events I thought might be fun and I found great ideas I never would have thought of particularly from Medway Public Library and York Public Library. I tried to alter events to meet the needs of the community I was reaching and to allow the best use of my budget. I chose to have no budget for my library and to rely on the fictional Friends of the library and the Library Foundation for funding. Volunteers and donations were used frequently, I based these ideas on my experience gaining volunteers and donations while volunteering at the Taylor Family Foundation, and participating in clubs at my high school. It is my belief that many companies and schools are willing to participate if approached correctly. I chose to use each season to represent the theme, Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. Each month represents certain holidays and recognitions such as Valentines Day and Black History Month for February.

Budget:
Although the children’s department of the library is very important to the library as a whole, the budget is extremely limited. The majority of the budget allocated for the children’s department is used to purchase new books and to replace damaged books. Any funds left over are used to buy props for story time and media related materials. All programs for the children’s department are provided by donations from the Friends of the Ukiah Library and the Ukiah Library Foundation. The Friends of the Ukiah Library collect books and monetary donations. Friends of the Ukiah Library has a membership fee of $25 dollars a year. Book sales are held four times a year with all proceeds going to the funding of library programs. A small café and bookstore is located at the library and run exclusively by volunteers of the Friends of the Ukiah Library. A monthly meeting is held by the Friends of the Ukiah Library to discuss upcoming programming ideas and to allocate funds between the children’s library programs and the other programs for the library. In certain circumstances sponsorship from companies, restaurants and local groups provide funds for special programs.

Resources:
It is assumed that the library has had continued story time programs, art programs and game day programs for the last few years. Budgeting is allowing for new updated resources combined with the resources already available. This library has received licensing for showing movies legally from www.movlic.com. A large screen is already available, along with chairs to accommodate groups of up to 90 people.

Publicity:
Ukiah Public Library strives to inform the public about all their upcoming events. A blog is available on  the library website which is updated five times a week by the Librarian. Twitter accounts are held by the librarian and library assistant at the Ukiah Public Library. By tweeting upcoming events and reminders parents can continually stay updated on the library events. Marketing of flyers, newspaper articles and ads are published weekly or monthly as needed. Flyers are always available at the front of the library to keep patrons updated. Local school libraries, offices and recreation centers display the flyers as well.

Story Times:
I felt it was important to represent continuous story time for Toddlers and younger children. Each week three different story times for Toddlers are held. The idea behind the program is to improve kindergarten readiness skills while enabling parents and children to create bonds with the community and help children develop a love for reading. A Family story time is held once a week for parents to bring all their children and participate in encouraging older children to read and to teach younger children the value of reading as a family. Special story times are also held throughout the year to encourage children to make reading fun and to keep reading during the summer.

Summer Reading Program:
Camp Read-A-Lot June 13th - August 19th      ($300)
This year the Summer Reading Program is called Camp Read-A-Lot! Each child is given a map of the Camp Read-A-Lot campground at the beginning of the Summer Reading Program.  Trails are marked on the map totaling ten books for younger readers and up to thirty for older readers. The first date the map is available is June 13th. As the child finishes a book they move one space up the trail.  The trail spaces are stamped by the librarian, children can bring in their books they have completed and watch as the librarian marks off the spaces. For every five books completed the child receives a raffle ticket to be used at the end of the program during the Pizza Party.

Incentives:
A Pizza Party is held at the end of the summer on Saturday August 20th at 12:00pm for all children who participated in the reading program. Prizes are rewarded to all the children in the form of bookmarks and stickers for their library cards. The top fifty kids win a free t-shirt provided by the Ukiah Library Foundation. The top ten kids also receive $10 to be deposited in their own savings account. The local Bank of the West provides this reward. Raffle drawings are held to win new books, pencils and treats. Pizzas are provided by donation from the local Little Caesars Pizza.
